Verna Ann Kemp Hayes, a beacon of warmth and creativity, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024, in San Antonio, TX, at the age of 92. Born in Lufkin, TX, Verna Ann's journey through life was marked by her friendly nature, spirited energy, and boundless creativity.
Verna Ann, as she was affectionately known, was the loving wife of the late Robert Kemp, with whom she shared many happy years until his passing in 1995. She found love again with Rutherford P. Hayes, and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage until his death in 2004. Her devotion to family was unparalleled, and she was especially close to her brother, John Trevathan, who recently departed, and her brother Herb Trevathan who also predeceased her. She is survived by her sister, Clara Bodhaine and her beloved sister-in-law, Anne Trevathan, along with her cherished children: Deborah Ratliff (Clois), Frank Kemp, David Kemp (Kathy) and Letha Kemp. Her spirit lives on through her grandchildren, Amy Morris, Patty Franks, Sarah Haynie, Matthew Ratliff, Jessica Kemp, Ryan Kemp, Robyn Justice, Kimber Hicks, and George Rowland, as well as her 23 great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy.
Verna Ann was not only a dedicated mother and grandmother but also a savvy businesswoman. She was the proud owner of Upsy Daisy Florist in Hobbs, NM, and later showcased her entrepreneurial spirit as a realtor on Tiki Island, TX. Her work was more than a job; it was an extension of her friendly and spirited nature, allowing her to connect with and serve her community.
Verna Ann's interests were as colorful and varied as her personality. An accomplished watercolor artist, her paintings were a vibrant testament to her love of life and nature. Her hands were rarely still, as she was also an adept potter and a skilled quilt maker. Her artistic talents were a source of delight to her family and friends, and her creations will be treasured for generations.
Her spirit was deeply intertwined with her faith, and she dearly loved attending church. Verna Ann's commitment to her faith was evident in the way she lived her life – with kindness, generosity, and a willingness to help others.
Those who knew Verna Ann will remember her for her love of people and her curious spirit. She was never shy about asking questions, a trait that endeared her to many and reflected her genuine interest in the lives and stories of others. Her curiosity also fueled her many interests and her zest for life, making her a joy to be around.
In honoring Verna Ann's memory, we reflect on a life that exemplified the joy of giving, the beauty of art, and the strength of family bonds. Her journey may have come to a close, but her story will be told and retold, a testament to a life of purpose, passion, and love.
