He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernal O. McAlpin and Vester L. McAlpin; sister, Roberta McAlpin Oliver; and his precious wife, Blondell Jarnagin McAlpin of Guys, TN. Vernice and Blondell were married for 70 years until her homegoing in 2024.
Vernice served his country in the United States Air Force from 1948 – 1952. He met Blondell when he returned home, and they were married in 1953. He then worked for the Air Force Logistics Command until retirement in 1984, serving at four different bases in Memphis, Mobile, San Antonio, and Dayton. Contract jobs after retirement took him and Blondell to Houston, Cincinnati, and Milford, CT, finally settling in San Antonio.
Vernice loved sports and captained the basketball team at Ramer HS, played intramural ball in the Air Force, and later on local work teams in Memphis. His second love was fishing which he passed on to his son and grandchildren. All of them love the water, fishing, and skiing behind Granddaddy’s boat. He loved all his grandchildren and great grandchildren giving them so much love and attention from birth.
Vernice and Blondell served in churches in each place they lived, teaching Sunday school, visiting class members and supporting their pastors. They belonged to Community Bible Church in San Antonio, loving their Saturday night Seniors Bible class.
