

Victor Anthony Prosper, Jr., age 86, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on February 14, 1938 in Berkeley, California, the second of three children born to Victor A. Prosper, Sr. and Catherine (Perich) Prosper. He grew up in Mt. View, California, enjoying the food and customs of his Hungarian / Yugoslavian heritage, and serving many years as an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Mt. View. His parents, sister, and relatives always lovingly called him “Sonny.” Victor graduated in 1955 from Bellarmine College Preparatory Catholic High School in San Jose, in 1959 from Stanford University with a degree in Political Science, and in 1965 from Santa Clara University with an MBA. On November 23, 1957, in his junior year of college, Victor married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Barbara Ann Gretz. The newlyweds lived in Barbara’s parents’ garage apartment while Victor finished his coursework at Stanford -- he working as a night janitor at Hewlett-Packard and she working as a bookkeeper at O’Connor Hospital. Victor was in the Air Force ROTC program at Stanford and the day after his college graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He went on to serve our country for 27 years in the United States Air Force, which included a year tour of duty in Vietnam. Victor retired at the rank of Colonel in 1986, having received the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit, as well as several Meritorious Service Awards. After his retirement from the military, Victor taught business courses at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio for 18 years. Victor and Barbara raised three children: Kathleen, Victoria, and Elizabeth.
Victor’s military career took the family all over the world – they lived in many states across the nation, as well as in Okinawa and Germany. In their retirement years, Victor and Barbara traveled extensively with friends on many cruises and golfing trips. Victor was known by all to be a tremendously loving and completely devoted husband and father, and a very generous, selfless man with a wonderful quick wit who brought hearty laughter and happy memories to many. He was a skilled racquetball and squash player, loved golf, and was a life-long fan of the San Francisco 49’ers. For the last 13 years of their lives, Victor and Barbara lived at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, enjoying the warm friendships of many other military retirees.
Victor was preceded in death by: his parents Victor and Katherine (known as “Katie”) Prosper; his sister Shirley Prosper; his brother David (who died only a few days after birth); and his very beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara Prosper. He is survived by his sister-in-law & brother-in-law Peggy and Lonnie Normandin; his sisters-in-law Rena Gretz and Jeannie Gretz, and many nieces and nephews; his three daughters: Kathleen Greene and husband Scott of Bayfield, Colorado; Victoria Leland and husband David of Plano, Texas; and Elizabeth Charbo and husband Mike of Ft. Collins, Colorado; his four granddaughters: Jennifer Leland, Megan (Leland) Karwoski, Morgan Charbo, and Jaime Charbo; and his three great granddaughters: Mary Claire Karwoski, Charlotte Karwoski, and Josephine Karwoski.
