Victor R. Saucedo

Mr. Saucedo joined the United States Army on December 16, 1942 at the age of 20 and attached to the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B, and served as Section Chief. He was in charge of supervising the movement and placement as well as firing and subsequent movement or withdrawal of the 105mm Howitzer in combat operation. He supervised the setting of sights to achieve fire precision. His responsibility was the control and tactical deployment of the weapon. He was stationed in New Guinea, Southern Philippines during World War II and was honorably discharged on December 31, 1945.

In 1947 he married Bertha Guajardo of Carrizo Springs, Texas. The family moved to San Antonio in 1958. Together they raised five children: Diane Saucedo Cortez, Michael, Oscar, Bob and Marty Saucedo. Victor loved baseball, he coached little league during the 60's at the Highland Park Little League complex where he also served as President.

He operated a Phillips 66 service station formerly located at the corner of South Gevers and Highland Blvd for many years. He eventually retired from Hillman Oil Co. in 1986. In the following years Victor and his wife, Bertha opened a childcare and learning facility located at the corner of South New Braunfels and Kayton Ave. It was named Michael's Childcare and Learning Center in honor of their oldest son who died in 1972 in a swimming accident in Yosemite National Park, California. Victor and his wife Bertha operated Michael's Childcare and Learning Center for 20 years. The many students who attended, lovingly referred to the proprietors as Grandma and Grandpa. The learning center is still in operation today. Age and subsequent illnesses prompted Victor and Bertha to retire again in 2005; however, the love of exercise and socialization lured them to the local Scott Davis YMCA on New Braunfels where they remained members in good standing for many years. Victor was involved in numerous community and youth organizations including Pop Warner Football, Little League, CYO, St Gerard Catholic Church Knights of Columbus, usher, YMCA and various PTC organizations and the like.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Saucedo. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Bertha G. Saucedo; daughter, Diane Cortez and partner, Jerry Olivarri; sons, Oscar Saucedo and wife, Ellie; Bob Saucedo and wife, Joan; Marty Saucedo and wife, Bertha; grandchildren, Clara Erdman, Jennine Gomez, Alan Cortez, Megan Saucedo, Jenna Saucedo, Quinton Saucedo, Leah Saucedo. Also six great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring.
