Virgil Davis Ecke, Jr.

Virgil "Dave" Ecke, passed away unexpectedly on September 8, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 71. He was born on April 6, 1953, in Houston, Texas to Doris and Virgil Ecke, Sr. As a teenager, the family moved to San Antonio, where Dave attended and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.

Dave married Stephanie (Ellis) in 1976 and from their prolific union sprang forth a big family which included two sons and six living grandchildren. His emphasis was always on his family, and he could usually be found at one of the baseball, basketball, volleyball, football games, or dance recitals his children and grandchildren were involved in. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he enjoyed spending time with them. Dave took immense pride in being their biggest fan, supporting them in their various activities, and offering advice that blended wisdom and humor. For everyone in the family, Dave was a fixture of love and support.

An avid fisherman, golfer and plant enthusiast, Dave made sure that when the weather accommodated, he was enjoying the outdoors. While he frequented many different area golf courses, his favorite fishing spot was in and around Rockport where had taken many vacations throughout the years. His favorite retreat, however, was his back patio where he would take pleasure in his innumerable plants and in the family and friends who were ever present at the house.

In recent years, Dave enjoyed traveling the world with Stephanie and their very close friends. He visited Spain, Ireland, Scotland, England, Amsterdam, France, Germany, Coperffagen, and got a special kick out of visiting Russia.

Those who knew Dave will remember him for his warmth and quick wit. He had a gift for making people feel comfortable and welcome, always ready with a joke or a story and related well with everyone he came into contact with. His unwavering loyalty to his family and friends was unmatched, and his kindness touched everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Doris E. Ecke and Virgil D. Ecke, Sr.; grandson, Thomas C. Ecke; and nephew, C. Ryan Ecke. Dave is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie E. Ecke; sons, Joseph R. Ecke (Megan) and Samuel J. Ecke (Jessica); grandchildren, Ella, Sammy, Hannah, Benny, Daniel, and Olive; brothers, Roger Ecke (Lisa) of Springdale, Arkansas, and Scott Ecke (Darcie); nephew, Randall Ecke (Lindsey); and numerous cousins and extended family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. George Episcopal Church, 6904 West Ave., San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 4:00 PM.
