Vonnie L Bowen

Vonnie L. Bowen, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, in Katy, Texas. She was born on August 1, 1934, in Tallahassee, Florida, and lived a life defined by love, faith, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Vonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Homer L. Bowen, and her mother, Vonnie T. Piper.

She leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Victoria Westphal, and son-in-law, David Westphal; grandson, Jason Westphal, and his wife, Lisa, along with their children, Braden and Olivia; her son, Michael Bowen, and daughter-in-law, Cathy Bowen; grandson, James Bowen, and his wife, Monica, along with their children, Aiden, Kylie, Mason, and Liam; grandson, Tyler Bowen, and his wife, Kimberly; and grandson, Jordan Bowen, and his fiancée, Emily Cartwright.

Vonnie was a proud graduate of Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama, where she formed lifelong values of perseverance, grace, and determination that she carried throughout her life.

Her greatest accomplishment was the love she shared with her family. She was a devoted wife to Homer Bowen for 52 wonderful years, a loving mother to her daughter, Victoria, for 72 years and to her son, Michael, for 67 years, and a caring, supportive grandmother to four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world, and she found her greatest joy in watching each generation grow.

Together with her husband, Vonnie owned and operated The Alamo Scene, a bi-monthly military newspaper serving military installations throughout the San Antonio area for more than a decade. She took great pride in helping build a successful family business while also serving as a dedicated military wife during Homer's distinguished 20-year career in the United States Air Force. Through every assignment and every chapter of military life, she remained a steadfast source of strength, encouragement, and love.

Vonnie embraced life with passion and creativity. She had an intense love of reading, especially history and romantic novels, and could often be found immersed in a good book. She possessed a remarkable talent for interior decorating, transforming every house into a warm and welcoming home. An avid gardener, she delighted in nurturing flowers and plants, finding peace and fulfillment in watching them flourish. She also had an eye for beauty, taking great joy in her treasured collections and in finding the perfect piece of jewelry that reflected her elegant style. Music filled her heart, and she found happiness in both listening to and singing her favorite songs.

Above all, Vonnie's life was anchored by her steadfast faith in God. Her constant trust in Him and unwavering devotion sustained her throughout every season of life and served as an enduring example to all who knew her.

Those fortunate enough to know Vonnie will remember her radiant smile that could light up any room. She was a beautiful, strong, and independent woman whose kindness, compassion, and unconditional love touched countless lives. She was a devoted wife, loving daughter, cherished mother, proud grandmother, and treasured great-grandmother whose greatest gift was making everyone around her feel loved.

A true Southern lady, Vonnie embraced both her strengths and her vulnerabilities with authenticity and grace. She believed in standing up for what was right, even when it was difficult, and demonstrated quiet courage through her compassion, generosity, and unwavering integrity. Her warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, love, resilience, and family will endure for generations. Her memory will forever remain a blessing, and those who knew her will carry her love in their hearts always.

Visitation will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas 78238, on August 3, 2026, from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, followed by a Funeral Service at the same location from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.

A Procession to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will depart from Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on August 3, 2026, at 10:00 am. A Committal Service will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #3, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209, on August 3, 2026, at 10:30 am.
