Major Walter Alfred Prescher Jr. (U.S. Army, Ret.), age 84, of Bryan, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 7, 1942, in Clifton, Texas, to Walter Alfred Prescher Sr. and Viola (Thiele) Prescher.
Walter grew up on the family farm in Womack, Texas, where he developed his lifelong love of the outdoors. An active young man, he balanced helping on the farm with football, track, church activities, and playing trumpet in the school band. He was also a dedicated leader in the Future Farmers of America.
After graduating from Clifton High School, Walter attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville for two years before transferring to Texas A&M University in College Station. He was a proud member of Company D-1, famously known as “Spider D.” Upon graduating from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education, Walter was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
In 1963, Walter met Sandi Johnson through a chance introduction arranged by his college roommate. Knowing Walter needed a date, his roommate suggested that his date, Sandi’s sister JoAnn, bring Sandi along. That introduction marked the beginning of a lifelong love story. Walter and Sandi were married in 1965 at the Fort Sam Houston Chapel.
Walter proudly served his country for twenty years as a Signal Officer in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Major. His military service took him to many places, including Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Germany, although Fort Hood remained an important part of his military career. Following his retirement from the Army, Walter continued to use his knowledge and experience as a contractor at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Sheppard Air Force Base, and, finally, Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio–Fort Sam Houston.
Walter’s final years were spent at Watercrest at Bryan, where he enjoyed participating in social activities and playing dominoes with friends. He will be dearly missed by his special friend, Ann.
Walter lived a life dedicated to serving causes greater than himself. He was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts of America, serving in numerous leadership roles, including pack master, scouting coordinator, assistant commissioner, and district commissioner. He was also active in his church, serving in leadership positions and participating in mission trips. Through his example, Walter instilled in his three children a lifelong commitment to faith, service, and helping others.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Sandra (Sandi) L. Prescher, parents, Walter A. Prescher Sr. and Viola (Thiele) Prescher; his brother, Melvin Prescher; his sister-in-law, Johanna Rubinstein; and his brother-in-law, Edward Clay Johnson III.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Arthur Prescher and wife, Rena, of Godley, Tx.; Rev. Dr. Walter A. Prescher III and wife, Rev. Bridget Prescher, of Bryan, Tx.; and Brenda Prescher of Casa Grande, Az.
He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren: Brandon, Joshua, T.J., Cameron, Michael, Justin, Andrew, Marcus, Hannah, Colten, Colista, Hailey, Hayden, Carcen, Cooper, Cody, Walter A. “Noah” Prescher IV, and Elijah Clay Johnson “Eli” Prescher; as well as ten great-grandchildren.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the numerous “care angels” at the Watercrest, including his caregiver Glamour JeanBaptiste, for the compassion, kindness, and loving care they provided to Walter.
A Remembrance of Life Service will be held on August 15, 2026, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1001 Woodcreek Drive, College Station, Texas 77845. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment with full military honors will take place at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor’s choice in Walter’s memory.
