Wonderful man, was always there for everyone, thank you for letting me into your home. Your influence has made a difference in my life..

I remember great-uncle Walter from all of the Scharf family reunions. He was always energetic and had the most awesome stories to tell. My very young brother young at the time, now he's 27 especially got a huge "kick" out of Uncle Walter. Uncle Walter had a way of skipping the moments required for thought-process in a conversation and linked straight to your inner-thoughts, making talking easier and much more fun. When he was a motorcycle cop in the 80's, he had a reputation among students that earned him the nickname "The Pied-Piper," because when he spoke- the kids listened to his authoritative and guiding voice. As an elementary school student in the days of the "bike-rodeos," where the San Antonio Police would teach safety to students, I realized that this particular task was not the 'normal duty' of the average policeman, but something that was volunteered for out of their personal care for the community.

Walter, you were just a big gentle guy to me, a professional who cared about your job at the SAPD, a nice man. Rest in peace, you've earned it. God bless your family.

Officer Scharf was a great man who made a lasting impression on many of the youth he contacted. He will be missed by many.

I am so sorry to hear of Walter's passing. I remember him in his uniform and "buzz" hair cut at St. Paul in San Antonio.It was nice to see him at the bike rodeos after I had started my own teaching career.A familiar face made it all the more fun. Please know your family will be in my prayers. I truly admired Walter. May God give comfort during this difficult time.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Officer Scharf. We both remember him fondly in his blue police uniform at Scheh Elementary when we were there as students. He made a wonderful difference in the Harlandale community.

Please accept our condolences on the death of your father. Losing a parent is very difficult, however, his influence will continue to provide guidence even in his absence.

I knew Walter for 42 years and don't ever recall hearing anything where he was concerned but praise and good things. He was a very professional police officer and an all around fine human being. He was held in high regard by all his co workers. My God bless him and his family. So long to my old friend.

I am wanting to let the family know that I will keep them in my prayers. I remember Officer Scharf when I attended Hutchins Elementray and he would attend the Bike Rodeo, that was more than 20 years ago. I remember him as a Humble Person. May God Bless his family during this time.

Walter and Robert Bob Urban were in the same Police graduation class and served the city togeather with many other great Police Officers, now we have many of them in their new home in Gods wonderful home in heaven, all of us will miss them.

I'm sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you and all your family. I did not know Mr. Scharf but if his son Jeff is any thing like his father I know that he was a great man. My prayers will always be with you.

My sincere sympathy to the family. Walter and I worked on the school safety unit and many hours overtime at the convention center. Very dedicated to the kids as a safety officer and as a family man. I hope he enjoyed his retirement traveling some of USA.The Lord will probably assign him as Bike Rodeo Chairman. Amen

My husband & I had alot of fun during our days at the arena with Walter. He always had a big hello and smile for us.He did the security at the Spurs games when my husband and I were in charge of selling Spurs items at the games.

May your sorrow be short. Remember and cherish the happy times. It will help you through the sad times. My Dad,Robert B. Urban deceased in 1991, was a proud SAPD officer for 34 years.

I have many fond memories of the days at St Paul Lutheran School and especially when older former student Walter would stop by and help with our sporting events. He always had a kind word for his younger siblings and their class mates. May God be with the entire Scharf family at this time.

I was a patrol at Bellaire Elementary. It was always a pleasure when Officer Scharf came to visit. He was extremely nice and very patient. He was an excellent roll model.

Our son, Scott Hermes, grew up with Walter & Pat's son, Gary. They went through 12 grades together & were always close friends. Larry & I will always remember Walter being at the Bike Rodeos at elementary school when our children participated. He always encouraged them to do their best but when they lost he somehow made them feel they were winners,too. It meant a lot to our children growing up to know a policeman. They were proud of that & I know Walter's kids were very proud of him, too. It couldn't have made a "small" impression on them because our son, Scott, grew up to be a San Antonio Police Officer also. We are proud to have known the Scharf family for so many years. 
We still think of them all & wish them peace through this sad time in their lives.
