

Walt was born on November 1, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey to Walther M and Florence Smart Leuschner. Walt was educated at Union Township. NJ, schools, NJIT/NCE college, and correspondence and technical schools.
Walt served in the US Army Engineer Corps as an instructor at Ft. Belvoir, VA, and was a skilled General Aviation private pilot. He also had been employed as a business partner consultant, manager, sales, field engineer, electrical contractor, and research technician in a variety of electrical equipment and manufacturing companies in the United States and Europe.
Walt married Dorothy “Dottie” Woods Leuschner. They had two sons, Robert and Thomas. The family was active in the Boy Scouts of America and several Methodist churches.
In 1979, Walt and Dottie remarried after converting to Roman Catholicism and moving to Califon, New Jersey. They retired to Venice, FL in 1991 while Walt worked part time for several local firms. Walt was appointed to Venice Isles Estates Community Board in 1993 and became president in 1995. He joined the effort to purchase their mobile home park and was successful in becoming Resident Owned in 1996 for 24 million dollars.
Walt enjoyed flying Piper and Cessna aircraft around the United States and Hawaii. He traveled worldwide with his wife Dottie and later with his beloved partner of 15 years, Grace Ashworth before their passings. Walt loved visiting with friends and family on his many trips. He kept everyone up to date on the current happenings via text, letters and cards.
Walt is preceded in death by his parents Walther and Florence Leuschner, brother David Leuschner, sister Ruth Leuschner Keuler, wife Dottie Leuschner, partner Grace Ashworth, son Thomas Leuschner, son Robert Leuschner, daughter in law Sandra Wade Rice Leuschner, and granddaughter Valerie Leuschner.
He is survived by his grandsons Joe Rice, Zachary Leuschner, Robert Leuschner (Brittny Leuschner), Andrea Leuschner Schleiff (Justin Schleiff), his 9 great grandchildren Zachary, Abigail, Barret, Sebastian, Reese, Tristin, McKinzie, Kassidy, and Jebediah, and the many Leuschner, Woods, Smart, Ferguson, Frey, Wantie, McGrain, Lovelady, and Keuler nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 18, 2025, at 9:30am at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 am at Fort Sam National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
