

Col. Walton A. Rutledge, US Army (ret.), age 93, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on December 30, 1920 in San Antonio, to parents, Nealy Willard and Martha Mable Rutledge. Walton received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland followed by a Master of Arts Degree from Trinity University in San Antonio. Walton entered the United States Army on April 15, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana. While in the Army, he continued his education by attending the U.S. Army Transportation Corps Basic and Advanced Courses at Fort Eustis, Virginia; the U.S. Army command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and the United States Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island. Walton retired from Fort Sam Houston, Texas on August 31, 1975, having served more than 31 years of which more than 8 years were served overseas including 28 months in Vietnam. During his service he earned several awards and decorations to include the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and the Vietnam Service Medal with 6 Campaign Stars. In addition, Walton was authorized the wear the Army General Staff Identification Badge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Jean W. Rutledge. Walton is survived by his children, Dorothy Jean Hull, Edwin Curll, Jr. and wife Karen, Nancy Vargas and husband Steven; 7 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 4th, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
