

Bill grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Jefferson High School, attended A&I University in Kingsville, TX, and Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO. He graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, TX in 1956 with a degree in Geology and Petroleum Engineering where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
In 1948 he joined the US Air Force Reserves serving five years. Following his military career and graduation, Bill went into the family Oil and Gas business with his father, Bill, Sr. His career took him to Calgary, Alta., Canada, Denver, Co., Midland, TX, and back to San Antonio and Boerne, TX. Bill retired to the family ranch in Raymondville, TX in 1978 to once again become a cattle rancher.
Bill was a member of The Argyle Club, The San Antonio Country Club, The San Antonio German Club and The Petroleum Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur E. Bakke, Sr. and Marion White Bakke. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patty Stone Bakke; his four children, Tricia Bakke, Wilbur E. "Burr" Bakke, III and his wife, Jill, Richard R. Bakke, and Michael J. Bakke, Sr. and wife, Sigbrit; eight grandchildren, Katie Coughlin Bakke, Brittain D. Bakke, Will E. Bakke, IV, Michael J. Bakke, Jr., James F. Bakke, Jonathan P. Bakke, Charles D. Bakke and Olivia C. Bakke; by his two sisters, Marion Bakke Blount and Isabeth Bakke Hardy and cousins, John E. Bakke, III, Samuel E. Bakke, Mrs. Leslie Ferris of Lake Bluff, IL, and Mrs. Duane V. Allmond of Dansville, VA.
