William Bill Booth Amick Sr.

February 27, 1934May 7, 2012

Bill was a gentleman who charmed everyone with his kindness and dignity. Through many years of dementia/Alzheimer's, we learned to let go as this wonderful man who touched so many lives was erased story by story, memory by memory, as everything familiar faded into the unknown.

William "Bill" Booth Amick, Sr., 78, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2012 at Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veteran's Home in Floresville, Texas. He was born in Prosperity, South Carolina on February 27, 1934 in his Grandmother's home to William Omerle "Buster" and Mary Sue Booth Amick.

He grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from Dreher High School, Class of 1953.

He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. While stationed at Fort McCoy Wisconsin he met and married the love of his life, Lois Sommerfield.

He worked and retired from the Mennen Company of Morristown, New Jersey (Mennen/Colgate) as National Sales Manager of Special Markets.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Great Granddaughter, Adalee Jewel Martinez; sister-in law Mavis S. Sommerfield; brother-in-law Harold Hutchison, Jr.; and brother-in-law Arlan L. Bowen.

He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Lois Sommerfield Amick of San Antonio, Texas. Daughter, Lynda Diane Johnson and husband Eric of San Antonio, Texas. Sons, William "Bill" B. Amick, Jr. and wife Leslie of Marietta, Georgia, and Douglas D. Amick and wife Kelli of Austin, Texas. Six grandchildren, Stephen A. Elolf of San Antonio, Texas; Amber E. Amick of Marietta, Georgia, Joseph A. Elolf of Schertz, Texas; Lara A. Elolf and husband Charles Allbritton of Selma, Texas; Katherine "Kate" Thiel and husband Nate of Marietta, Georgia and Casey Amick of Austin, Texas. Great Granddaughters, Kyla A. Martinez and Avalyn A. Allbritton of Selma, Texas and Emerson I. Amick-Dalba of Marietta, Georgia. Sisters, Mary E. Sikes and husband Robert of Bluffton, South Carolina, Marie Hutchison of Irmo, South Carolina. Brother, Larry D. Amick and wife Cynthia of Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Sister-in-law, Shirley A. Bowen of Largo, Florida; brother-in-law, Arthur D. Sommerfield of Bangor, Wisconsin. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

The family appreciates the beauty and sentiment expressed in flowers but would prefer contributions to Grace Lutheran Church, Prosperity, South Carolina, Abiding Presence Lutheran Church of San Antonio, The Alzheimer's Foundation, Odyssey Hospice or the charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank all of Bill's friends and caretakers at The Haven - Stone Oak in San Antonio and Dr. Jibrail Kasperkhan and his nurses for five wonderful years of caring; the Frank M. Tejeda Veterans Home in Floresville, Texas and Texas Odyssey Hospice for their compassion, skill and understanding during Bill's final days.

Dear Lois,
I was shocked today when I found Bill's obituary online. The beautiful photos of your life together both warmed my heart and and brought sadness for your loss. Bill always was a sweet guy and a kind human being, and I will never forget him. You are fortunate to have had 58 years together, but it must have been terribly hard to watch him suffer and fade away. Please accept my sympathy for your loss, and best wishes for life with your beautiful family.

I did not know Mr. Amick. I'm just a genealogist following up and keeping my family history file current. However, I was very touched by Mr. Amick's story and the family photos posted with his obituary. Tears came to my eyes as I saw in pictures what appeared to be the very happy and full life story of a wonderful man. You (his family) were very blessed to have been a part of it. Carry his memory with pride.

Bill was a dear friend to all who knew him. I was honored to have such a neighbor while growing up in San Antonio. Bill was not only my best friend's dad, he was also a close friend himself. He always wore a smile on his face, had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. He always made you feel welcome. He always made ME feel like one of the family. And, he was especially fun to be with around the camp fire on those cold nights of hunting and camping. The world will be a little bit duller place without him. He will be sorely missed.

I was so saddened to learn of Mr. Bill's death but so happy for him as he is relieved now of any and all suffering he was enduring. We cannot imagine the joy and beauty he now knows.
