Bill was born in Lansing, MI in 1937 to Stella and Grant Babcock. He grew up in Lansing playing the violin and loving sports in the house his father built. After high school, Bill joined the US Army, trained as a paratrooper, studied as a radiology technician, and was stationed in West Berlin during the Cold War. He explored Europe, experienced new people and cultures, and discovered his talent for learning and interest in medicine. After completing his tour, Bill returned home and was the first in his family to complete college at Michigan State University thanks to the GI bill. An Army scholarship helped him attend Northwestern Medical School in Chicago followed by an internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, Flight School and Flight Surgeon School at Pensacola Naval Air Station, and then a tour in Vietnam. After a residency in Dermatology and fellowship in Dermatopathology, Dr. Babcock completed a 24 year career of service in the US Army Medical Corp and retired as a Colonel with a Bronze Star, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Air Medals, and multiple other honors. Dr. Babcock then served his community in San Antonio as a Dermatologist for an additional 35 years.
Bill was an avid handball and racketball player, lover of classic movies, and fair grill master with a wry sense of humor and mischief. He was the architect of beach pirate maps with buried treasure, the grizzled veteran on ski slopes, and the Emperor Elf hosting wondrous Christmas parties for families of his clinic staff.
Bill is survived by his wife Deborah Denison Babcock, his brother Robert, two daughters Janiine and Kelley, his son Chris Todd, and his two step-children Cecily Dupont Walker and Christopher Dupont. He was predeceased by his sons Bill Jr and Andrew.
Funeral Service will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1416 N Loop 1604 E, on 22 August at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
