William "Buddy" Waring Flannery Jr.
February 10, 1941 – April 5, 2021
William Waring Flannery, Jr., known to his family and friends as “Buddy,” passed away on April 5, 2021, surrounded by his loving family after a short and intense battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, William Waring Flannery, Sr., his mother, Catherine Ritchey Flannery, his brother Richard Waring Flannery, and sister, Kay Flannery Stone. Buddy was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all he encountered. He will be remembered for his incredible sense of honor, humor, compassion, love, and generosity. Born on February 10, 1941, in San Antonio, Buddy graduated from Alamo Heights High School and the University of Texas at Austin where he became a lifelong Longhorn fan. He was an active member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and he served as an officer in the United States Army. His deep roots in Texas contributed to lifelong friendships serving the community through the Texas Cavaliers, The Order of the Alamo, and the German Club. Buddy began his professional career in the banking industry where he worked at Broadway and Main Banks for over 15 years. In 1981, he left the banking industry to run an oil and gas company. With his business acumen, grit, and determination, he was able to persevere through some of the most challenging times on record. His passion for the oil business kept him active in the industry until late in life. Spending time hunting and fishing with his family in the Hill Country and South Texas was when Buddy was the happiest. Buddy instilled a love in his children and grandchildren for the outdoors and taught them to be great stewards of the land to ensure continued enjoyment for future generations. Buddy was a family man and avid world traveler taking his entire family on wonderful trips. He never missed a football, baseball, softball game, tennis match, or dance recital to support his children and grandchildren. When anyone needed help or guidance, Buddy was the one to call. With a gentle soul and heart for service, Buddy was a loyal and dedicated friend. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly Cage Flannery, and children, Sylvia Flannery, Ann Hunt and her husband Steven Hunt, Will Flannery III and his wife Rebecca Flannery, and Rob Flannery and his wife Ann Flannery, all of San Antonio. He is also survived by 7 wonderful grandchildren: Kendall Hunt, Robert Hunt, Will Flannery IV, Don Flannery, Eloise Flannery, Cate Flannery, and Tess Flannery. The family would like to extend its greatest appreciation to the medical staff at the University of Texas Health Science Center, the Methodist Hospital, and the S.T.A.R.T. Center for the compassionate care provided during the past three months. A private family service will be held.
