He retired from the Army as a Captain in 1958. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service in San Antonio for 20 years.
Bill and his wife Jane resided at the Eden Home in New Braunfels for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Heffner; a son, David William Heffner; and a brother, George Heffner. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Townson and husband Billy of San Antonio; a daughter-in-law, Patty Heffner of Washington; 2 grandsons, Kevin Townson, and Kerry Townson and wife Carrie of Kentucky; 3 great-grandchildren, Jacob Townson, Mattie Townson, and Ben Townson; and 2 brothers, Fredrick Heffner of Tennessee, and Richard Heffner of Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 2, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
