William I. Dub Herndon, age 90, passed away on July 27, 2001. He was born on September 8, 1910, San Antonio, Texas. His career began with Handy Andy Supermarkets at the age of twenty-two and ended forty years later when he was Senior Vice- President of Store Operations. He had many fond memories of his years with Handy Andy and loved telling stories of the days they first began using grocery carts in the stores, automatic doors, frozen food cases, and other innovative concepts. He watched the company expand over the years to Austin, Corpus Christi, and Houston. Some of his fondest memories revolved around Handy Andy hunting trips to west Texas where he and his friends hunted whitetail deer and dined on gourmet meals. He loved
the outdoors and enjoyed dove hunting in south Texas and Mexico as well as photography of Texas wild flowers. He was president of the Texas Merchants Association and a member of the Business Men's Dinner Club. He was a generous and giving father who loved God and his family first and foremost. He and his beloved wife, Edie, were married for sixty-four years. They were members of the Starduster's Dance Club, and for about forty years, were actively involved in social activities at Oak Hills Country Club. They enjoyed traveling in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and many cities around the U. S. For over fifty years, Dub was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, and his beautiful voice could often be heard in the church choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edythe Black Herndon and is survived by his son, Robert I. Herndon and his wife Barbara of Floresville, Texas, and his daughter, Susan Ernst Gee and her husband Larry; four grandchildren, Gearis Herndon and his wife, Judy; Rebekah Street and her husband Matthew; John A. Ernst; and Julie Ernst Metcalf and her husband Sean. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Carter and Cameron Herndon. The family would like to thank Dr. James B. Morrison and Dr. Randall Singleton for taking such good care of him for many years. Special appreciation goes to the staff of Village Oaks Assisted Living, particularly "Pete", who made his last months pleasant and happy ones, as well as Brit-tex Home Health Agency and Hospice of Integrated Services. The family will receive friends at Porter Loring Mortuary North on Monday, July 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.
