William "Bill" Straiton Holman, passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2024, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Born on May 14, 1964, to Thomas "Henry" and Janelle Straiton Holman, he is survived by his mother; siblings Shirley Holman Colyer and Thomas Holman and their families; and his beloved daughter, Francine "Jenni" Janelle Holman.
Bill developed a love of the saxophone and jazz at an early age, and chose to pursue a career in music. Bill graduated from Churchill High School in 1982, received Bachelor's Degrees in Jazz Composition and Arranging and Saxophone and Woodwind Performance from Berklee College of Music in 1988, and a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from New England Conservatory in 1991.
After playing with several well-known bands in the Boston area, Bill moved back to San Antonio in 1999, where he continued to teach and perform on saxophones (from soprano to bari), flute, and clarinet. His gigs ranged from the San Antonio Rodeo to onstage at the Majestic with "Chicago - The Musical" to jazz gigs at Blue Star Arts to many other jazz ensembles and performances all over the state.
Bill taught student musicians from all over town, and most appreciated the ones who loved their instruments as much as he did. He once took the time after a long performance to write out arpeggios on a napkin for a kid who stopped him to ask him a serious question about music. His droll sense of humor, unselfish willingness to share his vast knowledge and sense of music, and most of all the wail of his saxophone will all be sorely missed.
