William "Bill" Wade Hughey was born on December 13, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Walter and Mary Hughey and died in Dallas on July 14, 2026. Bill was a man who built things that lasted, highways that stretched across the Texas landscape, a life surrounded with friends and family, and joyous memories that will be carried in the hearts of those who loved him.
Bill was a proud graduate of Breckenridge High School, where the foundations of his character were shaped. After High School Bill enlisted in the Armed Forces until honorably discharged in 1965.
Bill went on to marry the love of his life, Katherine Hughey, they spent over forty years together, until she passed away in 2006. Their love was a cornerstone of his life, and those who knew him understood that a part of Bill went with her. Bill adopted Kathy’s daughter Kristy, and later welcomed their son Timothy Hughey into their lives.
Bill devoted his career to the Texas Department of Transportation, spending his working years helping construct the roads and highways that connect communities across Texas. Bill, in his later years, would happily travel them, driving up from San Antonio to Dallas just to see his granddaughters' faces.
Outside of work, Bill was a man of many passions. He was a proud member of his local Corvette club, and few things gave him more pleasure than the gleam of a fine automobile. He loved to play a round of golf, never missing an opportunity to collect lost golf balls, or participating in his weekly bowling league.
Bill loved the outdoors in every form it took. He hunted with family members Charlie, Clint and Zeb, along with others, and worked on his yard at home with genuine enjoyment. His smile came just as easily doing simple things such as driving one of his hot rods, swinging a golf club, or eating ice cream.
In San Antonio, you could usually find Bill at one of his favorite Mexican restaurants, enjoying a good enchilada with the people he loved. San Antonio wasn't just where he lived… It was home. He loved everything about Texas, and that pride showed in the way he lived every day.
Bill was the kind of father his family could always count on. He coached his son Tim's baseball teams in Alamo Heights, instilling in his son not just a love of the game, but a standard of grit and dependability that would shape Tim's character for life. The two shared a lifelong bond built on shared passions, including numerous sporting events and golf rounds, enjoying each other's company, and making memories that would last a lifetime.
Bill was the original Mr. Fix It, a man who could look at something broken and see exactly how to make it whole again, and he passed that gift on to Tim. In the years between, Bill would make the drive up to Dallas to help Tim work his clothing sample sales right out of the front driveway…loading up his tables, setting up, and spending hours side by side hanging and folding clothes together. It was never really about the clothes, of course. It was two men who simply liked being in each other's company.
In Bill's final chapter, it was Tim who repaid every lesson and every sacrifice… homemade vanilla milkshakes in hand, delivering them personally to Bill's hospital room because he knew exactly what would bring his father comfort. Bill & Tim loved watching golf, the San Antonio Spurs and walking outdoors and listening to music. That is the kind of son you raise when you live the way Bill Hughey lived.
Yet for all of his adventures and friendships, the truest joy of Bill's life was his two granddaughters, Ashlyn and Abigail. He drove that highway between San Antonio and Dallas more times than anyone could count, always arriving with arms full of the sweetest little outfits when the girls were small, and-without fail-kolaches and Tootsie Rolls tucked in the cupholder of his truck. No holidays were missed and Easter baskets were always full. He enjoyed hearing about their life as they grew up and was proud of every milestone they reached.
Bill is survived by his devoted son, Tim Hughey, who cared for him with endless love and dedication during the final months of his life; daughter-in-law Angela Hughey, and by his cherished granddaughters, Ashlyn and Abigail. He is also survived by his brother, Charlie Hughey and wife Cody; his sisters, Pat Potts and Judy Langehennig; his sister-in-law, Judy Hughey; and his daughter, Kristy Elrod and husband Jim, and their children Ally and Matt. He spent his later years in the companionship of Jeanette Braesicke. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Walter and Mary Hughey; his brother, Ben Hughey; his wife, Katherine Hughey; and Pat's husband, Tom Potts.
Bill Hughey built highways so others could find their way. May he now travel every road with ease, and find all of his loved ones waiting at the end of it.
