William R. Johnston

He was born on March 22, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Russell Johnston and Pearl Jordan and spent his childhood in Chicago and Thebes, Illinois. After graduating from Southeast Missouri State University in 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Rosemarie (Ree) Gendron, and enlisted in the Air Force. He completed Officer’s Training School and enjoyed a 23-year career in the military. While in the Air Force, he earned an additional Bachelor's degree and Master’s degree. He and Ree raised daughters Linda and Janet; they especially enjoyed two assignments in Germany, where they made a group of lifelong friends. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked in the private sector in San Antonio until 1987.

Bill was an avid golfer. He was proud of the three holes-in-one he sank during his time on the course. Off the green, Bill was a lifelong learner, a history buff, an avid reader, a puzzle enthusiast, and a photographer. He will be remembered for the kindness, intellect, humor, and wisdom that he shared with those closest to him. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bill’s family was most precious to him. His family will always cherish Bill’s tales from his storied life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Rosemarie, and daughters Linda Johnston Wagner (Mark) and Janet Johnston, grandchildren Nathan Wagner (Morgan), Christina Wagner Lalli (Brian) and Jordan Meacham and great-grandchildren Harrison, Brooks, and Julia.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to James Borum, Honor and the staff and caregivers at Orchard Pointe who offered comfort and support during the last months of Bill’s life.

Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 am on August 4, 2025, at Porter Loring Downtown, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212. His burial with Military Honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
