Ross was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to James Atkins Jones and Bennie Jackson Jones March 23, 1945.
The Jones Family moved to Gladewater, Texas early in Ross’s life. Ross graduated from Gladewater High School in 1963. A standout athlete in basketball and baseball, Ross was on the team that made it to the state finals in 1963.
1963 was a special year because this is when Ross met the love of his life, his wife Susan Allen. Ross and Susan were married in Gladewater Texas in 1968 and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. For 54 years, through good times and bad, they remained by each other's side until his passing.
Ross received his Bachelor of Education from East Texas State University (Texas A&M Commerce) in 1968 and his Masters of Science, Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 1981.
Ross' teaching and coaching career began in Corpus Christi, TX in 1968. From Corpus Christi to Robstown, Gladewater, Big Sandy, McAllen and La Joya Texas. Ross enhanced the lives of many students and teachers during his 34-year career in special education. Upon retirement in 2002 he started a small business building golf clubs for kids, volunteered his time at the First United Methodist Church in McAllen, The Valero Texas Open and Texas Dove Hunters Association. He also fished the Lower Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay every chance he could.
“Pop Jones”, as he was affectionately known, was an avid outdoorsman. His joys were bird hunting and being on the water chasing trophy speckled trout and redfish. He loved to see his friends and family, especially his grandchildren, enjoy the outdoors and the lasting bonds that time afield created.
Ross is preceded in death by his parent, Jim Atkins Jones and Bennie Jones of Gladewater, TX;
brother, Jim Atkins Jones Jr.; father and mother in law, Tommy O. Allen and Sarah Allen of Gladewater.
Ross is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Susan; brother, Jerry B Jones Son, Darren Jones; daughter in Law, Courtney Jones; grandchildren, Garrett and Lauren Jones and Keaton and Avery Slimak; sister and brother in law, Julie Allen Tucker and Mike Tucker; brother and sister in law, Frank and Denny Allen as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
