He was born October 26, 1918 in Inez, Texas, the first son of William Henry Thornton, Sr. and Jewel Hill.
A graduate of Denton High School, he was recognized as very proficient in drawing and lettering. Also a proficient singer and whistler, Bill was asked to perform in many venues in his youth.
He bravely served his country in the US Navy for 20 years and retired as a Warrant Officer. On December 7, 1941 Bill was stationed at the Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor and was one of the survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack.
Following his military service he pursued a career with the Civil Service culminating with retirement from San Antonio Air Material Area after 17 years of service.
Mr. Thornton was a member of Coker United Methodist Church where he established an annual college scholarship for church youth.
Over the course of his adult life he had many vocations which followed a wide range of activities, both work and family related. Not many know of the diversity of his involvement over the years. Bill was a skilled woodworker. He had a knack of showing others the positive side of things and the great hope for the future. This trait probably translated to one of his favorite pastimes of fishing.
A genuine, selfless and loving man, Bill will truly be missed by all who loved and knew him.
The family would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Dad's special caregivers, Dee Dee, Jennifer, Mercedes, Luz and Cassie.
A special thanks is given to Iris Kirkland whom the family always referred to as "Dad's Guardian Angel".
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Geneva E. Thornton; brother, Jack Thornton; and sister, Marjorie Garrett.
Bill is lovingly survived by his son, Raymond W. Thornton and wife, Jacklyne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
