William Calvin Mickler, 91, born May 2, 1932, to Robert Wellington Micker, Sr., and Emily Wurzbach Mickler, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2023, surrounded by his loving daughters, Dorothy, and Madge.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; sister, Margaret Bebe Kinder and brother Robert Wellington Mickler, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Madge Bills Micker; daughter, Dorothy Mickler Duhon daughter, Madge Mickler Arnold and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Taylor Arnold and wife Claire, Shelby Arnold Redlingshafer and husband Joe, and Hallee Wurzbach Arnold; great-granddaughter, Anna Madge Arnold; nephews, David Kinder, Robert Wurzbach, and Robert W. Mickler III; nieces, Emily Kinder, Margaret Judson and Letitia Rutan.
Calvin attended Thomas Jefferson High School where he was a member of the State Champion Football team in 1949. He attended the University of Texas and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity where he also met his future wife Madge Bills. After they were married, Calvin proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. He and wife Madge settled down in San Antonio and remained here the remainder of his life. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, The Merry Knights and the Order of the Alamo. He loved being close to his family and friends.
Calvin had the most contagious and optimistic personality, loved fashion and good food! If you knew him, you would not forget him, and you most likely have a good story to tell. He was an important part of the women’s shoe industry, and you could expect to see him in his showroom at the Dallas Apparel Mart in his patchwork pants and fuzzy animal slippers with a huge smile on his face.
Calvin had a passion for cars and was so proud of his 1968 Shelby GT 500 and 1932 Auburn Roadster. He also loved football and never missed a Texas Longhorn or Dallas Cowboy Football Game. After retirement, he loved his train shows and vintage toys he traded on eBay. He was a loving, vivacious father and was a huge part of his grandchildren’s lives. “Papa” was a warm and colorful fixture, and his memory will live on through them. We will all miss his daily, morning calls and his text messages that could be quite colorful during football season!
Dorothy and Madge would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Simona Amarandei and her husband Cezar for the unwavering dedication and private care provided to our father during the last 3 years of his life. Your selflessness and compassion have made a significant difference in our lives.
Also, to a special friend, Renny Johnson, who took him lunch of his choice one day every week for the last 4 years. She would always put a smile on his face!
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeff Arnold, Taylor Arnold, Robert W. Mickler III, Ray Duhon, John Buenz and Steve Kartsonis.
The family will receive friends at Porter Loring Mortuary North on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
