Dr. Sawtelle was a graduate of UT Austin, UT Medical School Galveston and University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa.
He truly loved all of his patients during his 50 years of practicing medicine in San Antonio. His partners during practice were Dr. Perry Nadig and Dr. Jerry Kruse. His close friend Maury Maverick, Jr. referred to him in several of his articles as "The Beloved Urologist".
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sawtelle.
Survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Craig Joseph Sawtelle, Amy Sawtelle Roberts and husband, David, Molly Sawtelle Ellwood and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Emily and Claire Sawtelle, Hannah and Beth Roberts, Madeline, Kathryn, William and Robert Ellwood; brothers, Dan Sawtelle and Charles M. Sawtelle; sisters, Alice Dalley and Charlotte Field.
