Bill was born in 1953, in Moline,IL., and raised in Rock Island, where he attended Alleman Catholic High School. He enrolled in the University of Iowa Air Force ROTC program; and received his commission as lieutenant in 1977. His military service lead him to several locations in the US and abroad—including a two-year deployment to Reykjavík Iceland.
Throughout his time in the Air Force, Bill continued to further his education, earning a masters degree while stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. After attaining the rank of Captain, Bill retired from the Air Force, and continued his government service as a civilian project manager, working for several branches of the US military, as well as the VA. During this phase of his career, he worked for three years in Tokyo, Japan, before returning to San Antonio, where he eventually retired.
Even after his retirement, Bill never wanted to slow down. He had numerous interests and hobbies that occupied his time, including: repairing cars and computers; home renovation projects; and running an online resale business, to name a few. In keeping with his values of faith, family, and friendship, he always made time to help others—whether it meant coming to the aid of a friend in need, or volunteering at events hosted by his local parish.
Throughout his life‘s journey, Bill amassed a wide array of friends from around the US, around the world, and from all walks of life. He has been not only the rock of his family, but the central unifying force within his social circles. He will be remembered as tremendous source of strength and stability for everyone in his life— as unfailingly loyal, generous, and supportive to friends and family alike. Everyone who knew Bill will miss him greatly.
Bill is survived by: his brothers, Mark Schlegel ( Milan, IL), John Schlegel ( Fairborn, OH); his sisters, Shelley Shah ( San Antonio, TX), Carla Schlegel (San Antonio TX); his aunt, Sherry Frankville ( Milan IL); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by: his mother, Rosemary Schlegel; adoptive father Carl Schlegel; father, William Anderson; and his uncles John, Dominic, and Frederick Frankville.
