Dr. William Smith III, age 81, died on Monday, August 8, 2016, in San Antonio. Dr. Smith was born on January 11, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas to Anna Love and William Robert Smith, Jr. He was an avid outdoorsman and supporter of nature and conservation. Dr. Smith was a long distance cyclist as well as a triathlete. In fact, in 1990 he was the Triathlon World Championship winner in the men's 55-59 age group.
After receiving his doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Smith worked for the Oak Ridge National Laboratories and Research Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He also found himself working at Oxford University, University of Southern California, and Trinity University where he retired as a physics professor in the mid-1980s.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Brandon Fox Smith. Dr. Smith is survived by his former wife, Jodell Miller and his friend, Rudy Cedillo.
A private ceremony will be held by his friends.
