William Earl Wheeler passed away on September 10, 2011, at the age of 86. A native of San Antonio, Bill graduated from South San Antonio High School and Texas A&M University, class of '46. He served in the Army Air Corp in the World War II China-Burma-India theatre. He spent his entire career working at City Public Service as a professional mechanical engineer, retiring as superintendent of Power Plant Maintenance.
Bill will be most remembered for his joyful spirit, gentle disposition and consistently positive outlook on life. From the age of 49, his optimistic mind-set enabled him to confront and survive several major cancers. Bill always took time to acknowledge the simple things and never missed an opportunity to tell his family and friends how much they meant to him. He often remarked that his greatest accomplishments were his dear wife and beautiful children and grandchildren.
Music and an unwavering faith defined Bill's life. Since 1963, he was a devoted member of Jefferson United Methodist Church where he held various leadership positions and sang in the choir. He was a regularly requested soloist in the church community, and for 24 years he sang in the San Antonio Liederkranz men's choir (which will be performing at his service). He also served on the San Antonio Community of Churches board and volunteered for the SAMMinistries homeless shelter for ten years.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Earl and Clara Wheeler, and his brothers George and John Morgan. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances Ann Wheeler; daughters Sarah Wheeler, Martha Salzer (Dr. Thomas Salzer) and Julia Wheeler; grandchildren Brian Haefling, Aaron Salzer and Rachel Salzer; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorials donations may be made to: The Jefferson United Methodist Church Foundation, Inc., 758 Donaldson Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78201.
