William G. Wortham

Bill was born on October 13, 1950 in Denver, Colorado. He attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he met his best friend Wesley Lyle. They went on fishing trips for more than 40 years, pursuing the "big fish" in diverse places across Wyoming, Colorado, and even Alaska.

He then attended the University of Colorado Medical School. While a student there, he met Amy. They married in 1980, he joined the Army, and they served in Hawai'i, California, and Texas. He enjoyed learning the science of medicine while cherishing the relationships he built with patients and colleagues. In 2001, he retired while serving as Chief of the Nephrology Service at Brooke Army Medical Center. After his military retirement, he had two more careers -- as a private practice nephrologist and hospitalist before stepping away from patient care in 2020.

In retirement, he brought the same energy and attention to his family, friends, and other interests. According to his friends and family, he perfected his recipe for chicken wings. He enjoyed fishing and photography -- both with cameras and drones. He went to the gym most days, took walks with the family dog, Sheba, spent time with his family and friends, listened to jazz music, made "mix" CDs for his friends, and continued his love of learning.

He is survived by his friends and family, including: Wanda Frazier (Robert), William Granado, and Mike Wortham of Denver, Colorado; Joy Wortham Mitchell (Chris) and Emmett Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and Jonathan Wortham of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Amy Richmond Wortham, his mother, Mayme Wortham, father, Charles Wortham, brother Charles Wortham, Jr., and sister Lilian Wortham.

His family with host a visitation on Wednesday, September 23 from 5-9 pm at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home (1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218) and a pre-internment service on Thursday, September 24 at 9 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78234).
