Winifred Barnum Newman, a celebrated, world-renowned professional artist, sculptor, children's book illustrator, and author, passed away in San Antonio, Texas, on February 18, 2026. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 30, 1940. After arriving in the Great State of Texas, she became an advocate for Women's rights and a celebrated champion of destroying racism and uplifting the oneness of humanity. Winifred was the creative mind behind Southwest Airlines' mascot " T.J. LOVE “ and authored numerous books, including Gumwrappers and Goggles.
Winifred was preceded in death by her soulmate and husband of 52 years, Buhl Thompson Newman. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Winifred Elysse Newman (Michael) and Cehlia Newman-Menéndez (Jose), an artist/actor, three grandchildren, Dominic, Victoria, and Austin Newman-Menéndez, and two great-grandchildren, Adalisa Macias Menéndez and Elian Newman-Menéndez. Her sister Phyllis L. Sandifer (Richard), Howard N. Barnum (the late Mary Barnum). As well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her legacy of creativity and love will live on through her family and her timeless stories.
