Yolie was born in 1946 on the west side of San Antonio. At 17, she graduated from Fox Tech High School and soon received her Cosmetology license. Throughout her life, she owned and ran seven hair salons throughout San Antonio including Terrell Hills and Olmos Park. She lovingly cultivated lifelong relationships with her clientele and remained a practicing cosmetologist for over 65 years. When she wasn’t devoting time to her hair salons, Yolie loved vacationing with her husband in El Paso, New Mexico, the surrounding desert mountains and anywhere with a casino.
Throughout her life, Yolie always put her family first. She always made time for others whether it was for breakfast or for monthly luncheons, she was there. She loved planning and hostessing elaborate holiday parties for everyone she knew. She was uniquely gifted with creating an environment full of joy and love. Outside of family gatherings, she spent her pastime drawing and sketching, playing bingo, creating and writing stories, listening to “smooth” jazz and feverishly scratching the occasional lotto ticket. Most importantly, Yolie treasured her time spent surrounded by her children and grandchildren, especially for lotería nights. Although she will be dearly missed, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her mother Dora Mata Cantu and brother Rogelio Mata Cantu in heaven.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church on September 4, 2026, at 10:00am followed by a short reception in the church’s parish hall. Following the reception, Yolie’s ashes will be inurned at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:15pm.
