

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Yolanda Hernandez-Segura, who departed this life on March 12, 2026, born on July 5, 1952. Dr. Segura was a dedicated and loyal wife, mother, sister, friend, mentor, and member of her education community, leaving an unforgettable mark on many who hold her in their hearts.
A proud graduate of Martin High School’s class of 1970. Dr.Segura continued her education at Laredo State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and another in Secondary Education. She also earned a Master of Arts in English Literature from Texas A&M International University, and was most proud of her PhD in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University - Kingsville.
Dr. Segura married Victor in 1970 and shared 55 years of life together, raising a beautiful family of three children, Duvina Segura-Balcinovic, Juan Ballesteros (Lucy), and Albert Segura (Jackie). Dr. Segura was a practicing Catholic woman with a deep faith in Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and a belief in making family and education a priority. She was a faithful member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Somerset, TX..
Dr. Segura was also profoundly patriotic and took great pride with her family serving the military. Her husband Victor served the Marine Corps, during Vietnam. All three of her children served in the military. Her daughter Duvina and son Juan served the Army while her son Albert served the Marine Corp. Her grandson James Tovar served in the Marine Corp and her granddaughter Mevlida Balcinovic served the Army. Currently, her grandsons Elvis Balcinovic and Tessio Tovar are serving the Marine Corp and the Army, respectively. Dr.Segura also served herself by working with Auxiliary # 443 in Somerset, TX.
Dr. Segura is highly respected and loved for her 30 years of dedication to the Southwest Independent School District from 1994 to 2025. She served as a teacher, campus administrator, and district hearing officer. She also led the UIL Academic Team for several years, leading the campus to a Regional Championship win in 2001, and was recognized with the UIL Southwestern Bell Sponsor Excellence Award for the 1999 - 2000 school year. The Southwest ISD School Board honored her with the Inaugural 2025 “A Friend of Southwest ISD”. She held the most pride in the professional family she grew and loved with many faculty and staff whom she met throughout the years. Dr. Segura was proud to say she bled green.
Dr. Segura was preceded in death by her parents, Margarita and Francisco Hernandez, her siblings Fracisco Alfredo Hernandez, Maria Elena Hernandez, Ricardo Hernandez, and George Hernandez, and her son-in-law Asim Balcinovic.
Dr. Segura’s legacy of faith and love will forever resonate in the hearts and minds of many she has left behind: her husband, Victor Segura; her siblings, Margarita Hernandez (Gilbert Perieda), Francisco Hernandez Jr. (Minerva Lemos), Arturo G. Hernandez (Eli ), Rosaura Hernandez (Roberto Volpe), Miguel A. Hernandez (Margarita Lopez), Jaime Hernandez, Guadalupe P. Hernandez (Carlos Becerra Jr.), Jose Luis Hernandez (Sandra Y. Gonzalez), and Gerardo J. Hernandez (Sandra L. Gomez); her children, Duvina Segura-Balconovic, Johnny Ballesteros (Lucy), Albert Segura (Jackie), 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, Juan J. Ballesteros, Amanda Ballesteros, Adalynn J. Albarado, Vayda M. Albarado, George T. Albarado IV, Acai A. Tovar, Sofia S. Tovar, Jiraiya J. Tovar, Ezra E. Tovar, Cataleya C. Castillo, Anastasia A. Castillo, Anselmo A. Castillo, Adonis A. Tovar, Kairo A. Romero, Ania M. Holliday, Layla M. Holliday, Gianna M. Holliday, and many other family and friends.
The family will be receiving condolences on March 24, 2026 from 5 pm to 10 pm with the rosary to begin at 7 pm at Del Angel Trevino Funeral Home, 2525 Palo Alto Rd, San Antonio, TX. On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, a funeral procession will depart from Funeraria Del Angel for a Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 19711 N. Dixon St, Somerset, X 78069. Following the mass will be a 2:15 pm Committal at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd. San Antonio, TX, 78209.
