Anna Mae attended schools in Newton. After graduating from High school she worked at Boeing Aircraft. Anna’s dream was to be a nurse and on June 9, 1970 at the age of 45, she graduated from San Bernardino Valley College Department of Nursing as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Anna worked at St. Bernardines and Kaiser Hospitals. She retired in 1995 from San Bernardino Community Hospital as an Emergency Room Nurse, which she loved. She not only took care of the patients and staff but she also kept law and order in place. After retirement, she worked part time at Fairfax Elementary School as a School Nurse.
On February 16, 1946, Mervin L. Owens and Anna Mae were united in marriage. To this union four children were born. They remained married for 36 years until God called Mervin home. In April 1958, the family relocated from Wichita, Kansas to San Bernardino, California.
Anna accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at a very young age and grew up in Second Baptist Church in Newton. When relocating to Wichita she and her family joined St. Mary’s Baptist Church. In 1958, she along with her husband and children joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. David Campbell. Her service at New Hope extended for 61 years. Anna was a Trustee, President of Nurses Ministry for many years, member of the Senior Choir, the Women’s Mission Department and Dr. Robert L. Fairley appointed her as a Mother of the Church.
She was a charter member of the Socialites Charitable Club, at one time she was a member of the Eastern Star, she served as a City Commissioner for the city of San Bernardino for many years. Ann was also a self-appointed neighborhood watch person who would make sure the neighborhood was safe and yards were kept up. She loved gardening flowers, strawberries and vegetables, family, family gatherings and her church home, New Hope. Anna had a way of letting you know she was mad at you and after telling you off she’d invite you to lunch.
Anna Mae realized that her condition was getting worse and she would often volunteer this advice to everyone she came into contact with, “die young, don’t get old”.
Remaining here until they join her in Heaven is her son Allen and his wife Stanetta, her daughters Janice, Denise and her husband Uysel, her sister Daisy Connolly of Wichita, Kansas, her sister in law Lavern Allen of Highland, California. Grand children, Sheri Griffin, Kyrie Owens, Kenya Owens, Sheron Washington and wife Amber, Michael Robinson and wife Melissa, Brandon Washington, DeJa Owens and Allen Owens, Jr. 17 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren.
