John and I were High School classmates.  John was truly the gentle giant everyone says he was and a gentleman as well. John and my husband, Bruce, worked together for many years at station#5. Our families camped together for years as our boys grew up. We loved the campfire stories and the long bike rides up at Carpenteria. We will be praying for his family as we know how much they are already missing him. God Blessed all of us thru knowing John. We Will all meet again one day.

I just learned of John's passing, I worked with him on the San Bernardino City fire Department from 1978 until his retirement. I will always remember our bicycle trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and how John Blew his knee out in San Luis Obispo. John was a physically big strong guy, but gentle and shy. I can recall a Medical Aide run to the downtown Bus Station (Childbirth) with John, which we delivered on the scene. knowing his bashful nature I handed the rapped up infant to firefighter Marshall knowing full well he was a nervous wreck. Just to get a reaction from him. Even with those two giant pair of mitts he called hands, he almost dropped that kid. We teased him about that for several years! fun and dependable to be around, that was John Marshall!

Our prayers go out to John's family.  I miss" BIG JOHN".We worked together at station seven when the department was two platoon.He helped me with map drill ,learning all of the streets in town along with the hundred blocks which was a big chore for John because I was such a slow learner when it came to names and numbers. John will be missed by all who knew him.

Big john was the first person i ran into when i first reported to duty at central fire station. The first thing he told me was (Get a hair cut) and he scared the hell out of me ,so i went down and got one and found out later that he was a fireman just like me. We laughed so hard about it later and its my favorite story and memory of him ever.But i can say he loved my cinnamon rolls and always enjoyed my cooking.It was always a great honor working alone side one of the best brothers on the department. God bless you john for the memories and we will see you again. May you rest in peace.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of John.  I have many great memories of my uncle that have had positive impacts on my life.  Seeing my uncle at the fire station at a young age helped lead me down the path to becoming a firefighter.  Visiting my cousins camping at the beach fed my love of the out doors and camping with friends.  Uncle John you will be missed.

Dad/ Grandpa it has been a week that you have been gone and there has not been a second that we have not thought of you.  You are a wonderful father and Grandpa and you are missed terribly. Thank you for all the wonderful memories you have given us.  The family dinners, the camping and beach trips, and always the weekends trips we could get away to Big Bear and do nothing but eat!  We are thankful for all the little reminders of you everywhere we go.  We will miss your infectious big laugh, that would cause embarrassment but we couldn't help and laugh along. Thank you for being the awesome Grandpa you were.  Your famous tuna sandwiches, all the walks to the park, going to D.J.'s, riding in your Bronco, and all your hugs and kisses.  
We know you are in a better place now, probably the Grand Canyon or Carpinteria, but we still wish you were here with us.  We love you so much!

I was sorry to read about the passing of John. We were high school friends and had many good time together. RIP and Gids Speed.

Big man with even a BIG HEART ! John you will be missed

Big John was a big man in more than just his stature.  Always a big smile, always a big belly laugh. He was always fun to work with and loved a good practical joke. John had more energy than most, worked fires like a dynamo. Rest in peace my friend.

One of my favorite people to work with at San Bernardino City FD.  Always a positive person and willing to help.

John Marshall (Big John to us) will be deeply missed. John helped us with immense generosity as we were leading the Lutheran Church of Our Savior (San Bdno) youth group in the mid 80's and was a dear friend who, with his wonderful wife Marian, we shared many dinners out celebrating our varied  birthdays. We love you, John and will never forget you!

I  have  known John since he attended  my first birthday party when we were toddlers. John has always been a gentle giant. John was always kind and very nice. I am so sorry for your loss.

I have known John since he attended my first birthday party as a toddler. John was always a gentle giant. He had a very kind sole. I feel blessed that I knew John. I am so sorry for your loss. John was a wonderful man.

I am very sorry to hear that John passed.  John was an honest and a hard working person who was always there when needed.  I am sure he will be remembered always.

Sorry to here of John passing used to see him often when I work at the Alpha Beta on 40th and he was at Fire Station #7.My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

John and I were friends for over 50 years. I will cherish our friendship forever as well as the many years we spent together on the San Bernardino City Fire Dept. I don't remember hearing John complain unless he was out of something for one of his (our)  favorite recipes. He was a big man with a bigger heart and we had many good times together, both on the job and off duty with our families. Our wives attended & graduated from Capitol University together in Columbus OH and that was a start of even a longer and more precious friendship.
We were blessed to have John with us for these many years.

Looking forward to seeing you at the final alarm, buddy!!!!
