My dearest Mary,
  I miss you so much.  I will always remember our road trips with Scott.  And all the library events. The pet show judging at Rowe. The face painting at Halloween. The end of summer  parties for the reading game. And the church events. Especially the luaus. Just to mention a few  now As I sit in my backyard I miss you coming over for our nightly ice tea on the veranda (as it is referred to) with all stray cats and listening to the coyotes howling and the bats flying by. I know you are still with me in spirit.  You will live on in my heart  forever.  I love you. ❤ 

Mary was a wonderful children's librarian.  I recall working with her at the Inghram Library as a page and helping her setup for story time/library tours back in the 80s.  When Mary retired in 2011 she immediately volunteered to do preschool story time or any special events, such as Read Across America, the Christmas program with Santa Claus and the summer reading program.  She was ready to lead the children in songs, such as Frosty the snowman.  Patrons always ask for her and recall her story times. Also, she became a member of the Library Foundation and was always ready to promote the library. She will be greatly missed.

Mary was best known for entertaining generations of children with her story-telling skills that kept them eagerly engaged and entertained. Even after retiring – Mary continued to do story times as a volunte er and especially enjoyed Read Across America in early March and the Christmas events. Mary was a big believer in the value of libraries to a community, especially in San Bernardino and loved her job. She also during retirement served six years on the board of directors for the San Bernardino City Library Foundation, Inc., which is a non-profit that raises funds in support of our libraries.

We knew Mary as fellow parishioners and lectors at Our Lady of the Assumption. We remember her as always very cheerful, positive and a joy to be near. She was definitely a blessing to our parish and to  all who knew her.

Although I didn't know Mary as well as her closest friends did, I always enjoyed talking and appreciated her sincere compassion and kindness.  Our discussions were often about the library and the importance for children ( and adults) to enjoy reading.   We talked about family, our shared birthday (September 9) and all of the positive things about San Bernardino.  Mary also had a strong interest in local history and helped me several times with the annual Historic Tour of Mt. View Mortuary and Cemetery by talking about her ancestor and pioneer druggist Frank Towne and his family, all of whom are buried at Mt. View.  My prayers of comfort go  out to Mary's family and friends during this difficult time, while their treasured memories of this special woman live on forever. 

May all the wonderful memories of Mary help sustain all of you today, tomorrow and always. "A cousin is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost." Thinking of you and sending much love...


We were so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. I have so many fond memories of Mary from St. Bernardine’s High School, to when she was such a great help for so many years at the library, to listening to her read at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She was always a joy to be around. She will be greatly missed.

She was a good friend and supporter of many of the causes my sister, Marta Macias Brown and I were involved in.  I always thought of her as a good and kind person always willing to help in any way she could. Our deepest condolences from the Harrison , Brown and McQueen families.
