Mary Lou Derry of San Bernardino, California, entered heaven on November 27, 2020,
at age 73. She was born to George and Mary Copeland in Hillsboro, Ohio, in 1946. Mary Lou
had a spectacular singing voice, and was in the Madrigals Choir in high school. After
graduation from Cal High in 1965, Mary Lou worked as a cosmetologist. She married Donald
Derry in 1968, and they had three sons. She was a homemaker when her boys were young,
then she enjoyed a long career as a teacher’s assistant for San Bernardino Unified School
District until her retirement in 2007. Mary Lou attended Messiah Lutheran Church in Highland
for over 45 years, where she praised and worshiped with her beautiful voice in the choir.
Mary Lou was not only a loving mother and devoted wife, but an avid animal lover. She
always had several pets and took in many strays. She loved to do water aerobics at the
Highland YMCA, and leaves behind many dear friends. Her home was always open for friends
and family. She loved cooking and having the boys and their families over every month.
Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband Don. She is survived by her sons Neil,
Warren, and Ed and his wife Beth, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters
Julie Yamashita and Carol Copeland, and brother Thomas Copeland, and many nieces and
nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Chuck Copeland.
All services will be held at Mt. View Mortuary and Cemetery in San Bernardino on
December 21, 2020. Viewing will be from 10AM-1PM (10 people at a time), an outdoor
Memorial at 1PM with Interment following.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in her name to Messiah
Lutheran Church, 7070 Palm Ave., Highland, CA 92346.
