Mary Elizabeth Ferrall was born two months premature on December 6, 1947, at Loma Linda Hospital in San Bernardino, California. Her earliest memories are of going to medical conferences to be “shown off” as she was the youngest preemie to survive infancy for many years after her birth. Legend has it her father, Emry James Davis, found her hiding under a buffet table at one such event and so ended Mary’s brush with celebrity. But not her ability to beat the odds.
A treasured daughter of Emry James and Mary Davis, Mary was raised in San Bernardino, California and active in piano, dance, and Girl Scouts as a child. She earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award; the highest achievement in girl scouting and graduated San Bernardino High School in 1966.
Mary attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 1970. She married in 1971. 1974 brought the birth of the first of her two greatest joys in life, daughter Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Ferrall; Heather Kristine joined the family in 1977 in Lubbock, Texas.
Mary raised her daughters in Riverside, California and worked at the Housing Authority for Riverside County until retiring in 2007 for health reasons. By then she had been promoted to “Grandma” and spent time with grandson Daniel and granddaughter Paige until Dylan and Danielle joined the family in 2013.
Mary was an avid student of all things Hollywood, true crime, and the Arts and Crafts era of design. She enjoyed nothing more than a newsy conversation with her treasured friends, trip to Jerome, Arizona, or a quiet evening at home with her beloved cats and any number of the good books she voraciously read.
Mary was a prolific correspondent her entire life. The road to heaven must surely be paved with her letters to friends and family. Despite moving from Riverside to Murrieta and eventually to Redmond, Washington, she never lost touch with her lifelong friends.
Mary passed peacefully at home in Redmond, Washington with Beth and Heather at her side early on the morning of February 22, 2023. She is survived by her daughters, their husbands, four grandchildren and numerous friends.
