Penny Sanders passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She will be remembered as a kind and loving person who made friends no matter where she was. She loved to work in her yard and excelled at growing roses. She was a true “Daredevil” and “Thrill-seeker,” who loved off-roading, went sky-diving for her 80th birthday and drove a Formula One race car on her 85th birthday. She also liked nothing better than playing cards with her family or traveling to Las Vegas to play the slot machines.

Penny was born and spent her childhood in South Dakota. After graduating from Summit High School, she traveled to California with her two sisters to work in the defense plants during WWII. She then traveled to Washington State to work in the apple orchards and met her future husband Ivan “Rocky” Sanders. Penny returned to South Dakota at the end of the season and was soon followed by Rocky asking her to marry him. She was married to him for 59 years until his death in 2005. They settled in the San Bernardino area where she was a homemaker until 1965 when she went to work at Sears. She moved on to Kaiser Roth Hosiery for 18 years and retired from Nordstrom’s after 7 years in 1992.

She leaves a loving legacy of four children: Cheryl (Richard) Avalos, Rita (Ted) Aulgur, Jay Dean Sanders, and Pamela (Joseph) Hudspeth; eight grandchildren: Barry Aulgur, Brent (Kathie) Aulgur, David (Kimberly) Bellinger, Marc (Lisa) Avalos, Christa (Michael) Backstrom, Eric (Katy) Avalos, Lance (Dominique) Hudspeth, and Kyle (Emyleigh) Hudspeth; and is “Great Grandma Penny” to Chelsey, Kaley, Tarynn, Morgynn, Brentley, Jr., Karleigh, Farrah, Damian, Jasmine, Kristen, Emily, Alexandra, Benjamin, Ryan, Cora, Mia, and Leigh
