Vera was born January 11, 1942 to the late Jack George and Maggie Stapleton-George in Del Hi, Louisiana. Vera aka Shine is the 6th of 12 children. Vera was an active child and liked sports, especially basketball where she met and married Franklin Beckwith in 1961. Vera and Franklin moved to California in 1962 where Vera embraced working in various department stores over the strenuous work of sharecropping in Louisiana.
Vera was a loving person and a fabulous cook. Anyone who knew her knows she loved listening to Blues music and she never allowed you to leave her home hungry. Her southern hospitality, humor and great manners were always shared with others. Many conversations and a lot of love was shown in her kitchen.
Vera was a member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church in San Bernardino, California and an Eastern Star. She loved children and was committed to their safety and well-being. She worked as a crossing guard for the San Bernardino Unified School district where she reluctantly retired in 2016 after her health started to decline.
Vera was a great mother and trusted friend to many. Her love and kindness will carry on through the memories she created and the many lives she touched.
Vera is preceded in death by her parents and five sisters: Doretha George, Gloria Myers, Callie Sanders, Thelma Franklin, and Martha Burgess. One brother: Jackie R. George.
Vera leaves to cherish and celebrate her lifelong memories, One son: Stacey L. Beckwith and two daughters: Rhonda J. Beckwith and June M. Beckwith. Two sisters: Ruth L. Osborne and Mary A. Johnson (Otis). Three brothers: Patrick H. George, John R. George (Tina), and Stanley W. George (Ruth). Eight grandchildren: Ja’net Moses-Garner (Jeffery), Latisha Beckwith, David Beckwith (Marisol), Franklin Beckwith (Janeen), Candace Roberts, Merlaina Beckwith, Stacey Beckwith Jr., and Simone Martin. She was also Blessed with twelve great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and life-long friends.
