Albert was born on September 5th, 1930, in New Jersey, the third of 4 children of Alexander and Beatrice Kohanowich. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he played football, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and served as a helicopter pilot until his retirement as a LtCol in 1973. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart for combat operations in Vietnam.
Albert embraced life and loved storytelling, poetry reciting, woodcarving, kite flying, water skiing, golf, football, his dogs named Barney and Sadie and basking in the sun! He was always grateful for his family, a good meal and a glass of red wine.
He is predeceased by his brothers Alexander (Junnie) and Walter. Albert is survived by his sister Barbara, wife Dorothy, ex-wife Harriet, children Karen, Katrina and Kurt, step-children Tom, Joan, Cindy, Jackie, April, 13 Grandchildren and 8 Great-Grandkids.
A funeral service will be held on August 31st at MCAS Miramar National Cemetery at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please make a tax deductible donation to the Ocean Beach Veteran's Plaza http://www.obcdc.org/veterans-plaza, in Albert’s honor.
