Alfred Chi-Tai Wu was born on January 24, 1933 in Ningpo China to Tsung-Hsien Wu and Shu-Yung Lin Wu. They moved to Taipei Taiwan when he was in high school. He attended National Taiwan University from 1950-1952 and then immigrated to the United States in 1952 to pursue further academic studies. He received his B.S. degree from Wheaton College in 1955 and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland in 1960. From 1960-1962 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan as an assistant professor of physics in 1962 and was promoted to associate professor in 1966 and full professor in 1980. He worked in the area of quantum field theory, particle physics, and applications of group theory and quantum groups. He retired from active faculty status on May 31, 1999 and was named professor emeritus of physics.
Alfred married Corinne Chuan Lin Huang on July 22, 1967. They resided in Ypsilanti, MI until 2002 when they relocated to San Diego to be closer to their grandchildren.
Alfred was an avid photographer, classical music lover, book collector, and University of Michigan Wolverine fan. He regularly attended Chinese Bible Church. He loved puzzles, playing bridge, Chinese calligraphy, and tending to his garden and koi pond.
He is survived by his wife Corinne Chuan Lin Huang Wu, daughters Veda Wu Lin (Bill Lin) and Yvette Wu, granddaughters Katie and Emily Lin and siblings Katherine Han, Mary Tang, and Helen Huang. He was preceded in death by his siblings Qi Hui Hou, Francis Wu and Henry Wu.
Alfred went home to be with the Lord on April 23, 2019 after a hard fought battle with GIST cancer. Viewing will be on May 3, 2019 from 4-8pm at El Camino Memorial Park. Memorial Services will be held on May 4, 2019 at Chinese Community Church at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Rogel Cancer Center Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (victors.us/alfredwu) or Chinese Bible Church of San Diego.
