Mom was such a wonderful woman, smart, kind, honest, generous, with a quirky sense of humor and so much common sense. She started each day with a hot cup of tea and reading the newspaper and completing the crossword puzzle. Two of her favorite columnists were Richard Lederer (for his funny insights on life and language) and Nick Canepa (she wasn’t a big sports fan, but she loved his writing and clear voice). She enjoyed watching the hummingbirds and other wild birds and lizards scampering around the patio and hearing the kids play in the neighborhood.
Please support your local libraries! Every week we would borrow books (cozy mysteries, short stories, even some science fiction) and she felt the library had so many wonderful programs to make society better for everyone. And please vote! She and my dad both believed in this, they never tried to influence how we voted, that was up to us, the important thing was to participate, to vote and have your voice heard. She even volunteered as a poll worker for several elections.
She loved her family so much and was so proud of John and Sharon and the two wonderful human beings they raised, Audri and Jack. She was my best friend and a loving supportive presence in my life. Big hug, fist bump, drive carefully!
I love you, Mom.
Cath
We see you in the sea, in every breath, and in every hummingbird that passes. Since I can remember, I’ve connected hummingbirds—the messengers of joy—to my grandmother. They serve as a reminder to savor the present moment, and no one embodied that more than Grandma.
She had wings on her back and lived her entire life in the present. Without an ounce of regret, she was never afraid to take risks. Hell, she was a farm girl from Nebraska who, at 18 years old, moved with her best friend to Los Angeles with nothing but a dream for something more. That dream led her to create a wonderful life for herself. She had two fabulous children, gained a beautiful daughter-in-law, and got the two best grandkids in the world.
Living in the present gave her a life full of joy. I am incredibly grateful to be her granddaughter and to continue following in her footsteps. With all the love in the world, sayonara Grandma.
Love, Audri Fox
Jack has chosen the following passage, Proverbs 31:25-31
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.
