Alice Mae "Tootsie" Alexander was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on September 11, 1929 to Robert and Addie Alexander. She was the eighth of nine children. In 1938, Alice moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to live with her elder sister, Christine Nelson and her brother-in-law, who raised her. In Cincinnati, where she lived most of her life, Alice grew up enjoying the close relationships of her siblings and their families. In 1948, Alice married William Albert Johnson Jr., and four children were born of this union: Carol, William, Fred (Abdul), and Rose-Etta. In 1974, Alice wed Leon Harris, and they were married until his homegoing in 2000. Alice moved to San Diego, California in 2001 and made this lovely city her home. As a Christian, Alice surrendered her life to Christ at Rescue Temple Church of God in Christ in 1970. During her Christian walk she was known as an active church member serving as a Deaconess, on the Missionary Board, and eventually on the Mothers' Board. In her community, she was a devoted community volunteer. Her passion was assisting with the coordination of community events to create awareness that helped provide direction for neighborhood youth and teenage mothers. As a mother, Alice was known for her great sense of humor and straightforward point of view. Her mission as a mother was to love her children and instill the type of values that led them to seek a Christian life, desire for education, and to be a productive citizen in their immediate community. As a grandmother, she was known as "Grandma Alice" or "Gram." Alice took pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren telling family stories and sharing her words of wisdom. As a friend, she was known to be a caring listener and a mentor, who provided direction to numerous young women and men. Alice was known for her love of travel, watching mystery movies, midnight snacks, and love of candy. On the afternoon of Sunday, February 16, 2014, with her loving family present, Jesus called Alice to change her address to heaven. She is survived by her four children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom, you are loved and will be deeply missed by all. We Love You.
