Alicia was born in Sinaloa, Mexico. At a very young age her life changed. Her father suddenly passed away, leaving his eight children orphaned of a father, and with only their mother to provide and take care of them. With pain and sorrow, their family united to help one another move forward. Alicia and her sister Christina together with their mother began working to support and care for the younger children. The daily work consisted of waking up in the early dawn and carrying lunch pail, with food prepared by her mother Petra to sell at the local factory near her home. From there she had to hurry to arrive at school on time. School was very important to Alicia, so important that it did not matter to her to have to wake up so early, to go to work and finish all her obligations at home to be able to study. She was only a little girl and was only able to complete the third grade in school, but in that time she was able to learn to write, read and do math, which would become the tools that would help her move ahead in her life.
Life continued day by day. Alicia would find fun and adventures climbing fruit trees to pick mango, oranges and blackberries to share with her family. She learned to sow dresses, learned to cook delicious meals and took care of children for nearby neighbors and friends. As the years went by Alicia and her siblings began to grow up, as an adolescent her family moved to Tijuana, Mexico. Without her knowing it, there she would meet a young man by the name of Gonzalo who with time became her greatest support, father of her children and the greatest example of unconditional love.
The affection between Gonzalo and Alicia grew with the passing of time. She admired the dedication and effort that he assumed helping her and her family move ahead, and one day they married. Their first child was a son and he was named José Guadalupe. With much grief the child passed away within a few months. It was difficult to overcome the loss of her first son, but Alicia with all her faith in God continued living and became pregnant again. This time a little girl named Martha Leticia was born. She would be the eldest of three daughters. Maricela and Rita Maria followed and all three were born in Tijuana, Mexico.
During these years Gonzalo managed to buy a property in the neighborhood of Altamira. There, he bought a house for Alicia and their children. The memories grew in abundance for years, that little house was where many families were helped one by one in the best way possible to move ahead. Little by little the immediate and extended families of Alicia and Gonzalo began to grow and moved first in with them to Tijuana from Sinaloa and later to the United States.
Martha, Maricela and Rita continued to grow up and loved their home, friends and family. But one day Gonzalo and Alicia made the decision to take a giant leap of faith and move the family to the United States.
San Diego, California was the city they chose. The year was 1972, and with all the faith in the world Alicia asked God that this move be for the best of her family. In 1975, their fourth daughter Elizabeth was born and two years later Anna Alicia the baby of the family arrived. Her family felt complete and Alicia was happy.
God above all things blessed Alicia in her life. Her faith in him helped her every step of the way in every decision she made. Her life wasn’t always easy, no ones is, but she decided to dedicate herself to share the word of God with her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gonzalo passed away first to be with God on October 27, 2001. Many years went by waiting for the day they would be together again. While she waited, Alicia lived in faith, loving and helping her daughters move ahead in life. Finally, after seventeen year, God called her and she reunited with Gonzalo and all of her loved ones who had passed before her on March 5, 2019.
Tears flowed on that day and the world felt a little lonelier. The memory of Alicia and Gonzalo will live on in our hearts. This is their legacy.
