July 29, 1930-December 15, 2015
Angelo Scardina, age 85 years, passed away on Tuesday December 15. Angelo was born in the small town of Bagheria in Sicily, Italy. He was born to Salvatore and Giovanna Scardina and was brother to Antonino, Antonia and Rosetta.
Angelo was 14 years old when he moved to northern Italy with his brother to work as a carpenter to support the family after the war. After spending some time in the North, he returned to his hometown and accomplished his high school degree. He continued his line of work and became a master of carpentry which led to a very successful career.
Angelo met Caterina before he came to the United States. She went to say goodbye to some family members and Angelo happened to be working in that area and a sparkle caught his eye, the beauty and grace of Caterina. They soon started writing letters for over two years, always in different cities and across the Atlantic ocean. After two years of letter writing they became engaged.
Angelo married the love of his life Caterina Vitale on September 5, 1959. They had four beautiful daughters, JoAnn, Antoinette, Sallie and Diana. Joann married Frank Russo and had four children, Maria, Cathy, Frankie and Alyssa, with three grandchildren, Donovan, Chiara and Giulia.. Antoinette married Denny Kanakaris and had two children, Niko and Sophia. Sallie married Andrew Tutino and had two children, Christina and Antonino. Diana married Peter Tarantino and had two children, Vincenzo and Catherine. There is an amazing legacy of family and at the center of it all was Angelo.
Angelo was a man of spirit, who loved to travel, loved to dance and loved to be in the company of family and friends. He enjoyed playing bocci at the Bahia during summer weekends, and was the veteran cinque cento player, who passed on his skills to all of his grandchildren. There are no words to describe the unparalleled love he had for his wife, children and grandchildren. In fact, his favorite thing to say to his family was “I love you with all of my heart”. He will forever live on in all those whose lives he touched. We love you Papa.
