Arnold Roe

He was born to Joseph and Rebecca Roe on June 13, 1925, and spent his formative years in the Bronx, New York. In the 1930s, Arnold was awarded the Key to the City of New York for his academic excellence. He graduated from New York University at the remarkable age of 16, then pursued further studies in engineering. During World War II, Arnold bravely served his country in the Coast Guard as an Officer in the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946. Following his service, he was recognized with an Honorable Service Button, the Presidential Testimonial Letter, and the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Arnold enjoyed a distinguished career as a civil engineer, with his expertise taking him across the globe and across varied interests. He built hydroelectric damns in Colombia, Turkey, and Greece; contributed to the development of the Atlas Missile, helicopters, and pioneering computer technology; and he started the pistachio industry in the US. He earned his PhD in Engineering from UCLA in 1964 and was a founding member of ASEE. Arnold served as a professor of Engineering at CSUN from 1964 to 1992, inspiring generations of students. In retirement, he remained active with the Carlsbad Coastal Commission, world travel - especially to his second home on Allonisos, Greece - and cherished his roles as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Arnold’s 11-year marriage to Sarah Heller was blessed with three children: Gwendolyn, Sharon, and Saul. In 1961, he married his dearest love, Kiki Vlachouli Roe, with whom he shared an enduring partnership and welcomed their two children, Joy Maro Roe and Marinela Roe.

He was preceded in death by his son, Saul Roe, and grandson, Marshall Roe.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kiki Vlachouli Roe; his children, Gwen Jennings, Rocky Sharon Roe, Joy Roe Doyle, and Marinela Roe Farris; and cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend a reception at El Camino Memorial on September 6, immediately following the graveside ceremony, to celebrate Arnold’s remarkable life and enduring legacy.
