Died early Monday morning at home with family. Survived by her brother, John Burke of Honolulu and her daughters, Elaine, Connie, Barbara, Julia and Virginia; sons-in law, Bob and Rejean; grandchildren Kristen (her husband Aaron), David, Adrienne and Julien and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Frank Biewer, Capt. USN Ret. predeceased her in 1991.
Barbara was born in Burley, Idaho to John and Julia Burke. She was raised in Portland, Oregon with her three brothers.
Barbara graduated from Marylhurst College. She met her future husband, Frank in New York while pursuing an operatic singing career. The pair married in 1945 after the war. After extensive travel during Frank's Naval career as a submariner, the family settled permanently in San Diego in 1962.
Her love of music was surpassed only by her love of family. She volunteered with the San Diego Opera Guild, taught music appreciation at Sacred Heart Academy and sang in numerous church choirs. She loved golfing, gardening and reading mysteries. She enjoyed people, loved telling stories and participated in life to the fullest.
A Viewing will be held at Beardsley-Mitchell Mortuary on Sunday, November 20, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the Rosary starting at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, in Point Loma on November 21st at 9:30 a.m.
