OBITUARY

Benjamin D Martinez

June 24, 1939August 1, 2020

Benjamin De Guia Martinez, 81, of Chula Vista, San Diego, passed away on August 1, 2020. He was surrounded by his immediate family.

Benjamin was born on June 24, 1939 in Bataan, Philippines to Francisco Martinez and Josef De Guia, the youngest of six children. He attended college in Manila, where he then decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1956. As a 20 year Veteran, he started out as a chef, and worked his way up - first joining the Submarine Force, then working as an Electronic Technician until his retirement in 1976. While stationed in Hawaii in 1963, he met and married his wife, Angeline Suetos. Together they have 3 children - Micheal Martinez (deceased, 1964), Mark Martinez (55), and Melissa Martinez (50).

Upon completing his Navy service, he settled with his family in San Diego in 1977, where he worked as an Aviation Technician on North Island. Ben will be happily remembered for his love of vanilla ice-cream, gardening, fishing, playing keno, cooking his specialty prime rib and sangley Point chicken and most of all - being a loving husband, devoted father, and sweetest Papa to his grandchildren.

Benjamin is survived by his wife, Angie Martinez, his older brother Ruding Martinez (Philippines), his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Connie Martinez, his daughter Melissa Martinez, and his three loving grandchildren, Monica Martinez, Jaden Salinas, and Jordan Salinas. He is preceded in death by his son Michael, his sisters Auring, Choling, and Pepang, and his brother Paquito.

I'm Connie, and I'm the wife of Benjamin's son Mark. His dad did not take to me at first but later he warmed up as we got to know each other. I got to know him as a very funny, sweet and loving man. and oh man, he was a great grandfather to our daughter Monica. When Monica first learned to speak one of her first words were "Papa". From that moment one he was my Papa too! My fond memory of Papa will always be when we used to laugh together when he used to say I was his favorite daughter-in-law!! I am his only daughter-in-law! I love you Papa and I pray that you are resting in peace in God's Arms.

Uncle Ben or Mamang Ben as we call him is a beloved member of the family. He took good care of us while we were growing up in Olongapo City. He is the youngest brother of our mom. It was a good thing we were able to visit him four years ago when he celebrated his 77th birthday.

Sleep tight Mamang Ben. We love you!

Our condolences to Auntie Angie, Mark, Melissa, Connie and the grandchildren. Hugs to all of you.
