Betty Jean Koll-Dulay

September 1, 1949March 10, 2021

On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, Betty Jean Koll-Dulay, loving wife and sister, went to be with the Lord at age 71, after a long battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She passed away peacefully in her home at Lake Wohlford in Escondido, California, with husband, Octavio and brother, Ken by her side.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, California and Interim Healthcare of San Diego for their watchful care of Betty.

Betty was born on September 1, 1949 in Los Angeles, California to Raymond and Marria (Flocchini) Koll. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California San Diego in 1971, and was a Medical Technologist for 20 years in San Diego. The last 12 years of her professional career were spent as a Library Aide at the Escondido Public Library. On September 4, 1993, she married the love of her life, Octavio Dulay.

Some of Betty’s passions were God, the Catholic Church, family, friends, raising racing pigeons, traveling, video gaming, genealogy, music, movies, vintage television shows, planning theme parties, supporting Native Americans and random acts of kindness. She loved shopping and was always prepared for whatever emergency might come her way. A favorite quote of hers while shopping was, “If 10 of an item was good, 20 of an item was better.”

Using her artistic ability and impeccable long-term memory, Betty documented herself and family by making elaborately designed scrapbooks. She was happiest when with Octavio and their families. Octavio likes to film lengthy family home movies, and Betty was famous for signaling, with a funny face and a hand gesture, for him to “cut” when he wouldn’t stop filming. She was kind, caring, loving, humorous and was loved by many people.

Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Marria (1998), and her father, Raymond (2002). She is survived by husband, Octavio Dulay and family, brother Kenneth Koll, his wife, Jo Fojtik-Koll and family, Auntie Alice Flocchini and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2337 Irving Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113 at 10:30 am followed by a private burial service next to her parents at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anne Catholic Church.

So sorry to hear of Betty's passing. She and Octavio frequented the Latin Mass at St. Mary's parish and that is how we met. Octavio was so dedicated in bringing Betty to Mass before the virus. Even though she of course was not feeling well at all, they would be there with smiles on their faces! Nothing was going to stop her from participating in what was happening in the world. I was at a graduation ceremony at San Pasqual High School and once it was over, I saw a car with it's windows down and a person laying down in the back seat. Yes, you guessed it, it was Betty! It was a sweltering day but she wasn't going to miss that graduation! Bless her heart! I was just thinking of her and Octavio a week or so ago. May her soul rest in peace!
