Joe was born on December 16, 1938, in Wetumka, Oklahoma, to Beatrice Smith Osborn and Darl Garrison Osborn. He graduated from Wetumka High School in 1957 before joining the United States Army, where he proudly served his country, including service in Vietnam, until 1962. Following his military service, he attended the University of Oklahoma before eventually making his home in California. On April 24, 1969, Joe married Judith Ann Deffebach in Modesto, California. Their daughter, Toni Louise, was born on September 20, 1970.
Over the years, Joe worked in automobile sales and insurance and owned a small used car lot before pursuing a career in education. After earning his master’s degree in teaching, he taught at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels.
Retirement did not slow Joe’s passion for learning and storytelling. He published two books documenting the histories of the two places that shaped his life most deeply: Wetumka, Oklahoma, and Modesto, California. He also became an accomplished photographer, capturing thousands of images at weddings, parades, rodeos, community events, and everyday scenes that caught his eye. Through both writing and photography, Joe preserved the stories and spirit of the communities he loved.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Osborn; his daughter, Toni Osborn Faddis; his son-in-law, Jimmy Faddis; his sister and brother-in-law, Gwen and Mack Tyree of Palmer, Texas; his sister and brother-in-law, Darline and Pete Pendley of McLoud, Oklahoma; his niece, Pam Yannoni, and her husband, Nino; nephews Bill Dern and John Dern and his wife, Carrie; and great-nephew Randy Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and Darl Osborn, and brother Bobby Gene Osborn.
Joe was laid to rest with military honors at Miramar National Cemetery.
