She attended the University of Southern Mississippi. While visiting Port Gibson and cruising around town with her college friend Joyce Ann, a charming young Robert “Bobby” Linton Jones, spotted his friend Joyce Ann with a stunning new girl who caught his eye. He spun around, pulled them over and impressed her with his wit. Bobbie appreciated a good sense of humor and there he was, Bob Jones. The rest is history (one of her favorite subjects).
Bob joined the Navy in 1952 and a year later they married, on May 8, 1953, at the Corinth First Methodist Church. They moved to San Francisco and eventually settled in San Diego. It was in Point Loma where they started a family with the birth of Kerry Lea and then Thomas Linton. As they say, “You can take a girl out of the south but you can’t take the south out of the girl…” Her Southern charm and hospitality was instilled in her children; “Yes Mam!” Bobbie and Bob became members of the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church where they proudly raised their children in the Christian faith.
At this time Bobbie worked at Rhor Aircraft and met long-time friend Vonnie McMillin. Corky and Vonnie introduced Bob and Bobbie to dessert camping and the river. Then the Joneses moved to Bonita, California where Bobbie worked for Southwestern College in Student Employment Services. She enjoyed helping young people “find their way” while she took care of her husband and raised her own two children supporting their interests in school and sports. Even after moving to Bonita Bob and Bobbie continued to attend the Point Loma church, always sitting in the same pew.
When she retired, she enjoyed “a few of her favorite things” which included traveling the world, enjoying the arts and reading endlessly. She was a master shopper with a taste for the expensive at a bargain price. Always dressed to a tee, she shopped the world. Her house is full of treasures that she brought back from her travels. Bob doesn’t know how she got them home. Bobbie was “a trip!”
Her favorite place to be when she wasn’t traveling was Silver Strand State Beach (the last space on the end) in her “mobile beach house”. It was there that she relaxed, reflected, planned her next adventure, and read, read, read!
She was blessed with a wonderful family: son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Brian and Robin and four beautiful grandchildren: John Robert (21), Emily Patricia (18), Reese Margaret (13), and Taryn Lin (10). Grandma Bobbie was a loving, generous grandmother. As age challenged her body and mind, Bobbie continued to express her love for her family. She would say, “I love you Bob Jones” and he would reply, “I love you Bobbie Jones.”
Bobbie’s Southern style and charm will be remembered through her work, her commitment to her church, her devotion to her friends and family and by all those who loved and appreciated her for the unique and special woman she was.
