Raleigh Jasper Miles Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024 in San Diego, CA. Born on June 5, 1943, at McLeod Hospital in Florence, South Carolina, Raleigh was raised in the close-knit community of Coward, SC, a town so small that it did not have a single traffic light. He was born while his father was overseas fighting in World War II.
Raleigh graduated from C. Lynch High School in 1961 and, in 1962, enlisted in the United States Navy. As a proud Vietnam veteran, he served as an Ordinance man aboard the Crew One P5 Marlin in VP-50. His naval service sparked a lifelong connection to the sea, eventually leading him to settle in San Diego, CA, where he would marry and start his family.
While working part-time as a deckhand for Star and Crescent Boat Company, Raleigh earned his associate degree in the 1960s. He worked his way up to the operations manager at Star and Crescent, securing his Captain’s License and running the ships of the San Diego Harbor Excursion. Raleigh also started a side business around this time, operating a boat called the “Billy M” to carry port pilots, crew and supplies to ships anchored in San Diego Harbor.
In the 1980s, Raleigh worked to earn his 1600-ton Masters license and began captaining tugboats for Pacific Towing. In the 1990’s he operated a kelp cutter for Kelco, where he harvested kelp off the California coast. He returned to running tugboats with Foss Maritime, including the Pacific Knight, Pacific King and Pacific Viking, until his retirement. His career reflected his love for the water, his tireless work ethic, and his steadfast commitment to excellence.
Raleigh was a humble man who found joy in the simple things in life. He loved his family deeply, valued hard work, and appreciated the beauty of the sea. His strength and humility were matched only by his quiet kindness and love of a peaceful, meaningful life.
Raleigh was preceded in death by his parents, Raleigh Miles Sr. and Lily Bernice Miles (née Hyman). He is survived by his two sons, Bill (Jill) and Adam (Rachelle); his former wife, Janet; and five grandchildren, Logan, Ava, Morgan, Hannah, and Holly.
A celebration of Raleigh’s life will be held on January 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley, followed by a small reception from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A procession for interment will then drive to Miramar National Cemetery where Raleigh will receive Military Honors at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity in Raleigh’s honor.
